NEW ACCOMODATION and the LAUNDERETTE

The old Launderette we used to use and it's still going strong!

We finally moved into our new place around last week in September 1978, things at that time were fairly hectic as I recall, I was also back at College, one day per week and still working at the same Hotel, It was hard for us with a Baby living in just one room most of the time!

But we did have one particular friend in the House we shared with about 9 other families, her name was Shirley (she was the person who seemed to keep things going along in the house), she I remember helped me and Susan out several times during our stay!

One thing I do remember was having some sort of bother with the Washing of Clothes, I remember there was only one machine for all the families, so being a bit particular where we washed our clothes! it was my job to go to the local Launderette, which was about 5 minutes away, so every couple of Days we were over the Launderette, washing ans drying our clothes.

We used to use Nathan's pushchair to take to laundry backwards and forwards, it was a bright Orange colour! ................. Married life was Bliss!

Another thing I remember about this period in time, I didn't have my Music Center with us, because of space etc, it was left at my Mother's House, but I still brought the odd Vinyl Record to play at a later date!

One Record I remember buying was the Rose Royce Single, "Love dont live here anymore"
this was a Number 2 in U.K in September of 1978! I still have the Single to this day in our loft!

Things were about to change again for us, with Nathan still not right after his operation!

THE ISLEY BROTHER'S 3+3 part 1

One of the better groups of 70's & 80's in my opinion was The Isley Brothers! Between 1975 & 1989 I brought 14 of their Albums, from a "Motown Special" to "Spend the Night" also several Singles! They were one of the few Black Artistes who had their own Record Label "T-Neck"( a suburb of New Jersey), which were released through Epic Records.

The Isleys came from Cincinnati, they started out singing Gospel in the local Baptist Church, in them days they were a Quartet, including Brothers O'Kelly, Ronald, Rudolph and Vernon, but unfornately Vernon died in 1955, so they became a Trio, and in 1959 moved to New York and signed for RCA Records.

It was only their Second Single release, that became a Hit Single "Shout" this record was written by The Isleys. This was later recorded by Lulu.

In the early 60's they moved to Wand Records, where in 1962 they recorded the track "Twist and Shout" not an original Isley Track, but later that year it was used as a Template and released as a Single by none other than "The Beatles"!

During 1965 The Isleys toured and recorded with a then unknown Artist by the name of Jimi Hendryx. It was also 1965 they signed for Tamla Motown Records, having a Great couple of Singles in 1966 "This Old Heart of Mine"(incidentally, this track was originally written for the Four Tops!) and 1967 "Behind a Painted Smile"

By the late 60's The Isley Bothers had left Tamla Motown!

STILL HOMELESS! and FINALLY SOME HELP!

This is the house we moved into, front and side photos. We lived in the room, 1st floor on the right, our room included the side window!

So now we had a Sick Son and nowhere to live again, Susan had came out of Hospital the day Nathan had his Operation and and we were staying with my family, who luckily lived 5 minutes from the Hospital.

We had no money to buy a House and in them days there wasn't to much private rent unless you had a well paid job, which I didn't!

So we started visting the local Council most days to try and get on the Housing Waiting list, to get a Council House!

I remember visiting there loads of times, without luck! and then one Day we met a Lady by the name of Phyllis Flaxman, I believe she was the Housing Officer, anyway after a few visits she said she may be able to get us a room in a large local Council House with about 9 other Families, you had to share all other facilities, ie Kitchen, Dining Room, TV Room etc.

We stayed at my Parents House for about 2 weeks, this was not ideal as my Parents, really did not want us there! especially my Mother, who did not like Susan, so the quicker we got out of there, the better!

With having a Sick Child and nowhere to live! you would have thought both sets of Parents would have put their differences aside, to help us! but they didn't!

With the help of Phyllis Flaxman (which we were always grateful for this help), we finally got the move to the council house and out of my Parents House, which was a relief!

This was around the last week in September 1978.
