FUNKY-SOUL-VINYLS CLASSIC SOUL AND FUNK ALBUMS OF THE 60's 70's and 80's # 15

In this Series of Posts, I will writing about a Particular Classic Soul/Funk Album from the 60's 70's and 80's

The one's that stand out in my Mind, as The Best Soul/Funk/Jazz/R&B Albums ever Released. All of them, I purchased on Vinyl many Years ago and also now have them on CD or Digital Download today.

You may have a Differing view (as we all do) on these Choices, but these are my Favorites!

Number 15...........SLAVE..........SHOWTIME

In 1981 My Favorite Band of All-Time, Dayton Funk Band "Slave" Released their 6th Album on the Cotillion Record Label, Produced by Jimmy Douglass.


It was the Last album to Feature "Steve Arrington" before He left to Form His Own Band "Hall of Fame" the Following Year!


The Album Reached Number 46 on the US Billboard Pop Album Chart and Number 7 on the Us Billboard Soul Album Chart.


The Track list, as follows:

7. "For the Love of U" 5:08 (Adams, Arrington, Carter, Carter, Miller, Webster)
8. "Funken Town" 3:46 ( Carter, Webster, Miller, Johnson, Parker, Carter, Arrington)

Slave Personal for the Album:

What a Fantastic Album this was, Probably "Slave's" Best!


All Track's were Uptempo, apart from One (Track 7) and that was Probably the Weakest Track on the Album!


Which was The Best Track, I would probably say "Wait For Me"
but they are all Great, but as I Love the "Bass" with the Late "Mark Adams" being my Favorite Bass Player,  I also Liked "Smokin"


The Album had 3 Singles Released: Tracks 1, 5 and 2, with "Snap Shot" gaining the Highest Chart Placing!

One thing I always remember about this Particular Album, My Parents went to USA on Holiday in '81 and they Brought it back for me!


The only Trouble was, on the Journey back from Holiday, the Suitcase must have Been "Really Hot" on the Aeroplane, Because the First Track on the Album was "Warped" so that Meant Track 1 on Both Sides "Was Unplayable" Snap Shot and Wait For Me!


Luckily these were The Single Releases, so I got them that Way.


What a Fantastic Album and to think its now 31 Year's Old!

FULL TIME WORK AGAIN and JEFF LORBER

As I said in Previous Post, I was Working about 2 or 3 Nights Per Week, when I First Started my New Job at "King's Casino" but that soon Changed to more Nights, and then I remember going into Work one Night and was Told the "Second Chef" had Left!


This Worked out right for me, as they took on a New Second Chef and I was asked by "Peter" to do more Shifts, this I Accepted!


The New Second Chef was a chap by the Name of "Steve Green" he had Previously Worked with the Head Chef "Peter"at a Hotel in nearby "Norwich"


So I was back Working as a Full Time Chef within about 3/4 Months of Finishing on the Rigs!


I knew my "Wife" Susan never liked me Working Nights, but I was a "Chef" and didn't have too much Choice (but to Work Night's)!

I suppose when I Look back to our Earlier Lives nearly 30 Years ago, concerning our Marriage and "Our Kids" I should have tried some other Sort of Work (so I could have been Home, more in the Evening's), but all I had been was a Chef and a Butcher, and I had Worked at Most of the Butcher's in Town (there was only about 3/4 different Companies).


By this time, around early Summertime in 1984, me and Susan had been Married 6 Year's and "Nathan" was nearly 6 Year's Old and "Natalie" was 4 Year's old.

Back to Work, the New Chef "Steve" was a Decent Bloke and I got on Well with Him, his only trouble was He followed the Local Football Team "Norwich City" and I also remember he did not go Much on Soul Music!


Anyway Working with them 2 Chefs was Great, I cannot remember too many Disagreements with Either of them, although they did
Talk about "each other" a fair bit to me, as they were Like an Old "Married Couple" having known each other (and worked together) for a Few Year's!

 As for Some Music, back in late 1985, Keyboardist Jeff Lorber had His Biggest Album (to Date) it was Produced by David Frank and Mic Murphy Aka "The System" it was Entitled "Step By Step"

Step by Step was a Best track on the Album and was Sung by New York Session Singer" Audrey Wheeler and it Reached Number 31 in the US R&B Charts!


The Track was Written by Jeff Lorber and Anita Pointer of the Pointer Sisters and it was on the "Arista" Record Label in the US and on the "Club" label in the UK.

Number 14........TEDDY PENDERGRASS.......SAME

The Former Lead Singer of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes "Teddy Pendergrass" Released his Debut Solo Album in 1977 on the Philadelphia International Record label.


It was Entitled "Teddy Pendergrass" and Produced by Various Producer's (see Below), it was Certified a Platinum Seller, as were all of His First Four Album's!

The Whole Towns Laughing At Me...Reaching Number 16 in US R&B Chart,

You Cant Hide From Yourself... Reaching Number 7 in US Dance Chart.

This is a Great Album, not A Dud Track on it, I could not choose a Favorite Track, but I suppose the Track I have Played More than any other over the Year's is "The Whole Towns Laughing at Me" I Remember a Few Year's Ago, if me and the Wife were Having Problems, I always played Her Track B1! 

Also Easy Easy was a Great Track! 

Teddy Pendergrass was Born in Philadelphia in 1950, he 
Began as a Drummer in 1968, before Signing for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1969!

In 1971 he Signed a Deal at Philadelphia International Records in 1971, He had his First Hit (with Harold Melvin) in 1972, a Great Track called "I Miss You"

After Disagreements with Harold Melvin about Monies He left the Band to go Solo in October 1975.

Teddy Pendergrass Started Work on His Debut Solo Album in 1976. with a Release the Following Year.

His Road Accident, that Left Him Paralyzed from the Neck Down Happened in 1982.

He Passed Away from Breathing Problems a few Months after He had Beaten Colon Cancer, just over 2 Years ago in 2010.

Here's a Great performance of "Bad Luck" with Harold Melvin and a "Soul Train Interview" with Richard Pryor.
