THE GREATEST SOUL SINGER OF ALL TIME....EUGENE RECORD

In this Series of Posts, I will writing about the Artist's who are in My "Greatest Ever Soul Singer of All-Time" Poll.

The Poll is over to the Right of the Blog, it has been Running for a Few Month's now, so if You haven't already Voted, Please do so!

In these Post's, I will write a few Facts, Figures, Stats and Interesting Stuff on the Artist in Question, I will also include a Playlist of their 20 Greatest Songs.

This is the Last Artist in this Series of Post's, I have Enjoyed Posting about these Great Soul Artists but Look out for a New Voting Section to the Right!

Very Surprisingly Eugene Record has not had a Vote as yet, he was Lead Singer of my Favorite Soul Band, The Chi-Lites !

He and the Chi-Lites had some Fantastic Record's, just a Listen to their Greatest Song's, Real Soul Music!

ARTIST NUMBER 11..............EUGENE RECORD

Eugene Booker Record was Born on the 23rd December 1940 in Chicago USA.

He became Interested in Music at a Very Young Age, this was Attributed to his Sister , who was an Accomplished Pianist.

While at School Eugene Record Formed his First Band with Friends, Robert"Squirrell"Lester and Clarence Johnson they were Called "The Chanteurs"

They Released a Couple of Singles in 1959, without any Success!

They then Teamed up with Two other Friends, Marshall Thompson and Creadel "Red" Jones and the Quintet called themselves "The Hi-Lites"

They Released their First Single in 1964 "I'm So Jealous" which was a Moderate Hit.

That same Year of 1964 saw Clarence Johnson Leave the Band, and they were now a Quartet, they had a Few more Release's without any Success!

Then the Hi-Lites Had a name Change, they Added an "E" and Became The Chi-Lites.

By 1968 The Chi-Lites Signed a Record Deal with Brunswick Records, who were Ran by Carl Davis, the Following Year of 1969 they had their First Hit Record "Give It Away", this Track Reached Number 10 on the US R&B Chart.

This was Taken from the Album of the same name "Take It Away" (which Reached Number 16 on the US R&B Chart), the Follow Up Single was a Double A-Side Featuring "Let Me Be The Man My Daddy Was" and "The Twelfth Of Never"

This was to Start a String of Hit Singles and Albums for The Chi-Lites!

By this Time Eugene Record was Writing and Producing other Artists, Including Jackie Wilson and Barbara Acklin.

Between 1971 and 1976 the Chi-Lites Released some Fantastic Soul Music, both Albums and Singles, heres a List of some of the Best:

By 1976 Eugene Record Left The Chi-Lites to Pursue a Solo Career, he Released a Total of 3 Albums, but with only Moderate Success, and by 1980 he had Re-joined The Chi-Lites.

They Released a Further 4 Albums up until 1988 (with only a Small amount of Success) Incidentally the First 2 Albums were on Carl Davis "Chi-Sound" Record Label, then in Left "The Chi-Lites" again, for the Last Time.

Eugene Record was to Suffer from Cancer a Few Years Later, which he Ultimately was to Die from in July 2005.

THE GREATEST SOUL SINGER OF ALL TIME....CURTIS MAYFIELD

ARTIST NUMBER 7.............. CURTIS MAYFIELD

Curtis Lee Mayfield was Born on June 3rd 1942 in Chicago Illinois to Parent's Marion Washington and Kenneth Mayfield.

When Curtis was 5 Years Old, his Father left the Family, His Mother then moved the Family to several different Housing Area's in Chicago, before finally Settling in the "Cabrini-Green Projects".

Curtis Mayfield Dropped out of High School Early in 1956 at about 14/15 Years of Age to join a Band by the Name of "The Roosters"

Two Years later in 1958 "The Roosters" became "The Impressions" but it was not until 1961 before their First Hit was Recorded!

The Song was called "Gypsy Woman" now Classed as a "Classic Curtis Mayfield Song"

Throughout most of the 60's "The Impressions" had numerous Hits, including some Great Songs, such as: "Amen" Its Alright "I'm So Proud" People Get Ready "Keep On Pushing" and Choice Of Colour, in fact they had nearly 40 Single Releases!

The First "Impressions" Album was Released in 1963 and named "The Impressions" there were a Total of 12 Albums in the 60's.

Curtis Mayfield was Multi Talented included in the Instruments He could Play were, Piano, Guitar, Bass, Sax and Drums, not to forget He was also a Singer Songwriter and Producer.

By 1970 He had Left "The Impressions" to go Solo, it was around this Period He also started His own Record Label
"Curtom Records"

His Hit Records carried on as a Solo Artist, He always Wrote song's with Meaning to them, including about Poverty, Drugs and Life in the USA etc.

Some of His Greatest Tracks came when He was a Solo Artist, including "Move On Up" We Got To Have Peace "Super Fly" Its Alright and "So In Love"

He carried on Recording until the Mid 80's, Mostly He was Producing for other Acts, but continued to Tour throughout the 80's.

This was to come to an End on August 13th 1990, when He was doing a Sound Check for His Outdoor Concert in Brooklyn, New York.

High Winds got up and Toppled a Lighting Stage Rig on top of Curtis Mayfield, He Survived the Incident but was Paralyzed from the Neck down, His Spine was Crushed in 3 Places, He Never Walked (un-aided) again.

He was to Record another Album in 1997 called "New World Order" which He had to Lay on his Back to Sings the Words, but He could not Play any Instruments!

But it came to an End on December 26 1999, Curtis Mayfield was to Die from His Steadily Declining Health caused by His Paralysis.

THE GREATEST SOUL SINGER OF ALL TIME....TEDDY PENDERGRASS

In this Series of Posts, I will writing about the Artist's who are in My "Greatest Ever Soul Singer of All-Time" Poll.

ARTIST NUMBER 4..............TEDDY PENDERGRASS

Born "Theodore DeReese Pendergrass" on March 26th 1950, Teddy Pendergrass was a Singer/ Song-Writer who could also Play the Guitar, Drums and Piano.

He first found Fame in 1972 as the Lead Singer with R&B Band "Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes" when they Signed to Gamble & Huff's Record Label "Philadelphia International"

TP Featured on 4 "Harold Melvin"Album's before Leaving Over a Dispute about Money, in 1976.

He Signed as a Solo Artist with Gamble & Huff and Released His Debut Self-Titled Album in 1977.

The Album went "Platinum" & Reached the Following Chart Positions in the US, Pop Chart Number 17 & US R&B Chart Number 6.

In fact TP First 4 Album's (between 1977 and 1980) All Achieved "Platinum" Status!

His Highest Ever Placed Album was His 3rd Release "Teddy" Reaching Number 5 on US Pop Chart and Number 1 on the US R&B Chart!

By the Early 80's the US Media were Calling "TP" the "Black Elvis" and He was one of "The Hottest Properties" in the US!

This was all to Change, when on March 18th 1982, TP was involved in a "Car Accident" the Brakes on His "Rolls Royce" Failed and he Hit the Guard Rail in the middle of the Road and crossed the Opposite Traffic Lane and Hit 2 Trees!

Teddy Pendergrass Suffered Severe "Spinal Cord Injuries" Leaving Him Paralysed from the Waist Down!

It was 2 Years (in 1984) before He Released His Next "Brand New" Studio Album, it was Called "Love Language" which incidentally Contained a Track called "Hold On "which Featured a "New Female Singer" by the Name of "Whitney Houston"

His First Live Performance after the Accident was on 13th July 1985 at the US version of "Live Aid" this was Performed in Philadelphia.

TP made a Total of 6 more Album's after His Accident!

He Finally Retired from the Music Business in 2006, after this time there were Plans to Make a Film of His Life and He Set Up a Charity for Paralysed Victims, which He Worked "Tirelessly" for!

Tragedy was to Strike a few Years later in 2009, when "TP" was Struck Down with Colon Cancer, which was Successfully Operated on, in June of that Year.

But by a Couple of Month's later in 2009 "TP" was back in Hospital with "Respiratory Problems" and Sadly 7 Months Later on 13th January 2010, he was to Die of "Respiratory Failure" He was Aged 59.
