He was one of the Artists I have seen in Concert, a few Years ago now, about 27 I believe, how time flies!
I remember about 30 years ago in the UK, there was a TV Documentary on BBC 2 on a Sunday Evening, it was called "Black Wax" and it Featured Gil Scott-Heron, his Music, Poetry etc it also featured GSH walking around Washington Dc, showing you the Well Off Parts of the City and the Not So Well off Parts!
Recently (6 weeks ago) I had to spend a night in Hospital, and it was this DVD I took with me (and the Wife's Portable DVD Player, of course) that was the Best 2 Hours I spent in Hospital and the Quickest!
If you ever get the chance to watch the DVD, have a look at the Music Section, and play "Waiting For The Axe To Fall" what a Great Performance by GSH The Horn Section and especially the Bass Player!

He made some Great Music over the period of his Career, If I had to say what were his Top 5 Songs, I would say the Following:
5....Home Is Where The Hatred Is
4....Lady Day and John Coltrane
3...The Bottle
2...Winter in America
1...Wating For The Axe To Fall Live and Studio
Gil Scott Heron was legendary in his ability to articulate black thought and emotion in his music. This is what black music needs to return to. We aren't singing/ rapping about how we feel or about what we think. It's solely what we do. Absent is the soul that used to define black music.

I think it’s sad how much respect he gets when he dies. I notice that about a lot of song writers. I have never heard of this guy until he dies and everyone is talking about him. Not saying he doesn't deserve it. Just saying he always should have had this much respect.
